Cardinal Robert McElroy has been a vocal critic of conservatives opposing the Vatican’s lifting of a ban on blessing gay couples, suggesting their stance stems from animus toward LGBT people.
McElroy himself caused controversy by saying sodomy is not necessarily grave sin and advocating scrubbing the distinction between homosexual temptation and acts.
Cardinal McElroy said, “The distinction between orientation and activity cannot be the principal focus for such a pastoral embrace because it inevitably suggests dividing the L.G.B.T. community into those who refrain from sexual activity and those who do not.”

In response, Bishop Thomas Paprocki accused McElroy of heresy for rejecting basic Church teachings.
Bishop Paprocki said, “Unfortunately, it is not uncommon today to hear Catholic leaders affirm unorthodox views that, not too long ago, would have been espoused only by heretics.”
He continued, that it is “deeply troubling to consider the possibility that prelates holding the office of diocesan bishop in the Catholic Church may be separated or not in full communion because of heresy,” because they “reject essential truths of the faith.”
While Pope Francis elevated McElroy to cardinal, Bishop Paprocki warned of prelates holding heretical views.
McElroy has also downplayed abortion’s importance compared to climate change and defended Joe Biden receiving communion despite his abortion support.
Cardinal McElroy said in 2020, “the long-term death toll from unchecked climate change is larger [than abortion] and threatens the very future of humanity.”
McElroy’s progressive stances and criticisms of conservatives on LGBT issues have sparked significant debate and counterarguments within the Catholic Church.
