A recent Economist/YouGov poll found that more Americans believe Donald Trump would defeat Joe Biden in a 2024 presidential election matchup, despite the candidates being tied at 44% each currently.
45% said Trump would win versus 34% for Biden, with independents favoring Trump by 24 points.
Republicans were more confident of a Trump win than Democrats were of Biden.
The survey results come as Biden faces mounting questions over his mental acuity, fueled by a special counsel report on his retention of classified documents.
Special Counsel Robert Hur wrote, “We have also considered that, at trial, Mr. Biden would likely present himself to a jury, as he did during our interview of him, as a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.”
“Based on our direct interactions with and observations of him, he is someone for whom many jurors will want to identify reasonable doubt,” the report continued.
Hur added, “It would be difficult to convince a jury that they should convict him — by then a former president well into his eighties — of a serious felony that requires a mental state of willfulness.”
The report noted Biden’s inability to recall details like when he was vice president or when his son died.
It also suggested a jury would be hesitant to convict the elderly former president due to identifying reasonable doubt about his mental state and memory.
