Chip and Joanna Gaines faced backlash for posting a photo with WNBA player Brittney Griner after her jersey retirement ceremony at Baylor University.
Griner, a former Russian prisoner, received criticism for her past comments about the national anthem and her imprisonment in Russia.
The Gaineses, who are Baylor alumni, were criticized for supporting Griner, with some accusing them of being too “woke.”
“Chip and Joanne have turned so woke it’s pathetic,” the post’s top comment stated.
“Go woke, go broke,” another commenter wrote.
“Proud of her for what?” another said. “Trashing America but getting out while a Real American Hero someone to be proud of is still in jail!”
“I honestly feel we should not play the national anthem during our season,” Griner said previously.
Griner’s stance on the national anthem changed after her release from prison, expressing gratitude for being back in the U.S.
“I’m grateful to be here, that’s for sure. I’m not going to take a day for granted,” she said.
