In Virginia, the Democratic-controlled House of Delegates rejected a near-total abortion ban, which was a central theme in the previous year’s legislative elections.
The rejection aligns with Democrats’ campaign promises to protect abortion access.
“For months, House Democrats told Virginians that a Democratic majority would protect their rights and freedoms and this subcommittee did just that tonight. We believe the choice to seek reproductive healthcare — and it is healthcare — should always be a decision between a woman and her doctor, not politicians,” House Democratic caucus spokeswoman Morgan Hopkins wrote.
Republicans largely supported a proposal to ban abortions after 15 weeks, with exceptions for specific cases.
Democrats are advancing bills to prevent the issuance of search warrants for menstrual health data and are planning to seek abortion protections in the state Constitution.
These actions reflect the ongoing debate and political positioning surrounding abortion rights in Virginia.
