Chenguang Gong, a naturalized U.S. citizen, was arrested and charged with stealing trade secret technology related to detecting nuclear missile launches and tracking ballistic and hypersonic missiles.
He transferred thousands of sensitive files from his employer to personal devices, including blueprints for infrared sensors used in space-based systems and military aircraft.
The stolen information was valued at hundreds of millions of dollars and had significant national security implications.
“We will do everything to protect our nation’s security, including from foreign threats,” U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada said.
“We know that foreign actors, including the [People’s Republic of China], are actively seeking to steal our technology, but we will remain vigilant against this threat by safeguarding the innovations of American businesses and researchers,” Estrada said.
Gong had also applied to Chinese “Talent Programs” and sought funding for similar projects, potentially aiding China’s military. If convicted, he could face up to 10 years in federal prison.
