In February 2018, SpaceX launched Elon Musk’s cherry red Tesla Roadster into space as a demonstration of the Falcon Heavy’s capabilities for future Mars missions.
Since then, the car, carrying a spacesuit-clad dummy named “Starman,” has been tracked by enthusiasts.
It is currently about 65 million miles from Earth, moving towards Mars and the Sun.
The Roadster’s irregular orbit around the Sun will remain stable for millions of years, but eventual destruction due to radiation and impacts is expected.
Despite not being observed since March 2018, simulations estimate its future movements, with potential close approaches to Earth, Venus, or the Sun.
Astrophysicist estimates suggest a 22 percent chance of a collision with Earth within 15 million years.
While originally intended for a heliocentric orbit near Mars, there were no means to precisely maneuver the car into that orbit.
Musk has mentioned the possibility of launching a spacecraft to catch up with the Roadster for photographs or potential return to Earth for research.
During the launch, the dummy “Starman” was set to listen to David Bowie’s Space Oddity and Life On Mars? during the journey.
