Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson faced criticism after a resurfaced video showed him explaining why he hadn’t scheduled a trip to the Mexican border, citing his responsibilities as a mayor and a parent to three Black children.
Critics mocked his remarks, highlighting the migrant surge in Chicago.
“I have a wife, I have children, they have schedules,” Johnson said.
“And plus, we still have public safety that we have to address, we still have the unhoused that we have to address, I still have a budget that I have to address,” he said. “And I’m doing all of that with a Black wife raising three Black children on the west side of the city of Chicago. I am going to the border as soon as possible.”
Despite promises to visit the border, a planned trip was canceled as the mayor prioritized addressing local issues.
“Incredible! He has a wife and children AND has a job. What an amazing man,” one X user wrote.
“You asked to be a sanctuary city now deal with it. Nobody cares what color you are or your family is,” another said.
“I have children who attend schools who have soccer games, y’all,” Johnson said. “You know, you all are asking me as if I’m not a parent in this city. I get it, I’m mayor, but you’re asking me to give you a date.”
“This mission is going to take all of us,” Johnson said. “There is a strong commitment still for the state, county and city to continue to challenge the federal government to respond to this international crisis”
Governor JB Pritzker offered state aid to manage the crisis, emphasizing the need for collective action across government levels.
