Right-wing efforts to dismantle diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs in state education systems have been remarkably successful, with GOP lawmakers in 21 states introducing laws to dismantle the programs, and nine states passing such laws since 2021.
The backlash, fueled by fear of a more antiracist society and a perceived vision of white nationalism, aims to revert to pre-reform norms.
Many believe that such laws prohibit or discourage university policies and coursework addressing historical bigotry, exclusion, and antiracism, leading to homogeneity in universities and restricting exposure to diverse ideas.
Some fear the push against DEI programs reflects a broader trend towards exclusivity and undermines efforts for racial justice, potentially leading to a more narrowly defined American society.
