Boeing faces potential delays in delivering around 50 aircraft due to improperly drilled holes in some 737 fuselages, a problem discovered by supplier Spirit AeroSystems.
This issue comes amid heightened scrutiny following an Alaska Airlines 737 Max 9 emergency landing and concerns over quality control.
The NTSB and FAA are investigating, and Boeing’s stock has declined.
“While this potential condition is not an immediate safety issue and all 737s can continue operating safely, we currently believe we will have to perform rework on about 50 undelivered planes,” Boeing’s Stan Deal wrote.
The situation has strained relations with major customers like United and Alaska Airlines, with reports of loose hardware in door plugs.
Despite FAA grounding, some planes are returning to service.
Boeing withdrew a safety exemption request for its new 737 Max 7 model due to a safety standard issue.
