The family behind a plan to build the world’s tallest flagpole in rural Down East Maine as part of a billion-dollar veterans’ tribute development has decided to abandon the idea.
The proposal, which included a village with various amenities and a towering flagpole, faced opposition in the town and did not meet height restrictions.
The developers, known for their work with military cemeteries, remain dedicated to honoring veterans and are now exploring alternative ways to achieve this goal.
“They believed this project was a good project to honor veterans. But now they’re looking for new ways to honor veterans in the future,” lawyer Timothy Pease said.
“We didn’t create ordinances to take down the flagpole project. We created ordinances to give the community control of their community,” Jeff Greene said.
“It’s like putting the Eiffel Tower in the Maine wilderness,” one resident said.
