New York City, under Mayor Eric Adams, is launching a $53 million program to provide prepaid credit cards to around 500 illegal immigrant families for purchasing food and baby supplies.

The initiative aims to replace costly meal services at temporary shelters and could potentially expand to cover an estimated 15,000 people.

The program is expected to save the city over $7.2 million annually.

Mayor Adams has been vocal about the need for federal assistance in managing the influx of illegal immigrants, which is projected to cost taxpayers $12 billion over three years.

Kayla Mamelak, a spokeswoman for Mayor Adams, said, “Not only will this provide families with the ability to purchase fresh food for their culturally relevant diets and the baby supplies of their choosing, but the pilot program is expected to save New York City more than $600,000 per month, or more than $7.2 million annually.”
