Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene aims to censure Rep. Ilhan Omar for allegedly prioritizing Somalia over the United States.
Greene accuses Omar of violating her oath of office and making treasonous statements, citing a translated video where Omar speaks passionately about representing Somalians and opposing formal recognition of Somaliland.
This move follows Greene’s successful censure of Rep. Rashida Tlaib. The resolution will be considered for a vote by House leadership.
“Whereas elected members of Congress take an oath to bear true faith and allegiance to the United States without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion. Whereas Republican Ilhan Omar took an oath of allegiance to the United States upon becoming a citizen declaring, ‘I absolutely and entirely renounce and adjure all allegiance to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen,” Greene said.
“Whereas on January 7th, 2024, Representative Omar gave remarks at an event in Minneapolis where she made treasonous statements. Whereas Representative Omar said she has spoken to many Somalians who asked her to intercede for the Somali government by pressuring the United States government into certain actions,” she said.
“A couple of days ago, we heard some people who call themselves Somalis (Somaliland) or claim to be Somalis have signed a [memorandum of understanding] with Ethiopia on access to the sea… Many Somalians have personally called me to encourage me to speak to the U.S. government and help Somalia,” Omar said.
“The U.S. government will only do what Somalians in the U.S. tell them to do,” she said. “They must do what we want and nothing else… The U.S. is a country where one of your daughters (myself) is in Congress to represent your interests.”
“Sleep in comfort, knowing I am here to protect the interests of Somalia from inside the U.S. system… Together we will protect the interests of Somalia.”
“How many more killings is enough for you?” Omar said. “Is it a thousand more? Two thousand more? Three thousand? How many more Palestinians would make you happy if they died? Would you be fine if all of the people of Gaza were gone?”
“Would that make you happy? Would that be the thing that makes you proud?” she added.
“Whereas these statements by Representative Omar clearly violate the oath she took as an elected member of Congress to protect and defend the United STATES Constitution,” Greene said.
