An anonymous letter sent to Harvard University alleges that its chief diversity and inclusion officer, Sherri Ann Charleston, committed 40 instances of plagiarism over the years, including in her 2009 dissertation and a 2014 peer-reviewed journal article co-authored with her husband.
The letter claims that she recycled material from her husband’s previous work and failed to conduct new interviews for the 2014 paper.
According to The Free Beacon, “And in her sole peer-reviewed journal article — coauthored with her husband, LaVar Charleston, in 2014—the couple recycle much of a 2012 study published by LaVar Charleston, the deputy vice chancellor for diversity and inclusion at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, framing the old material as new research.”
The outlet reported that the article “has the same methods, findings, and description of survey subjects as the 2012 study, which involved interviews with black computer science students.”
Experts suggest that these allegations warrant an investigation and constitute a severe breach of research ethics.
Notably, some argue that Charleston’s actions represent a worse “scholarly sin” than a recent plagiarism scandal involving a former Harvard president.
Harvard University and related offices have not yet commented on the matter.
