Democrats in Massachusetts have repurposed a recreation center in a predominantly black Boston neighborhood into a shelter for migrants and the homeless.

The decision, made by the governor and mayor, has sparked controversy among residents who are concerned about the impact on local children who relied on the center for support and structure.

The shelter is expected to house up to 400 people, including illegal immigrants, and is set to operate until at least June.

“We’re here today because we really don’t have a choice,” Gov. Maura Healey said. “Families continue to come into this country, continue to come to Massachusetts, and we have over the last several months opened up locations throughout the state.”

State and local leaders have promised upgrades to the center in exchange for its temporary use as housing.

“This is not the first time the community has been asked to sacrifice, over and over again,” Boston Mayor Michelle Wu said.

“We have kids who are also impacted negatively and our program is one of the only few stable times in their lives,” track coach Tony Darocha said.
