A police K-9 named Nyx was shot and killed while chasing a suspect in Illinois.

The suspect, Malik Trotter, was wanted for a domestic situation.

When Nyx and her handler, Officer Vargas, tried to stop Trotter, he fled and shot Nyx.

“K-9 Nyx paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving and protecting this community,” Chief of Police Carla Redd stated.

“I ask that you all keep K-9 Officer Vargas, the entire K-9 Unit, and Nyx in your thoughts and prayers. K-9 Nyx is family and we are truly thankful for her service to the Rockford Police Department.”

Vargas then found Trotter, who opened fire, leading Vargas to return fire and ultimately arrest Trotter.

Nyx died, and the department mourned her loss, holding a procession in her honor.

The investigation into the shooting is being led by the Winnebago Boone Integrity Task Force.
