California legislators have introduced a reparations package aiming to address the legacy of racism in America.
The proposed reparations do not include cash payments and focus on education, civil rights, and criminal justice.
The move follows a committee’s recommendations, which included controversial proposals such as separate schools for black children.
Governor Newsom has taken a cautious stance, and the bills do not include financial compensation for descendants of Black slaves.
There’s a proposal to change California’s Constitution to fund programs targeting specific racial and marginalized groups, which could face a constitutional challenge.
These bills mark the first legislative effort by any state to adopt reparations, distinct from smaller city initiatives like Evanston, Illinois.
