The White House is launching an initiative to involve school leaders in promoting safe firearm storage to protect children.

The effort, announced at an event with First Lady Jill Biden and Education Secretary Miguel Cardona, aims to reduce firearm-related deaths and school shootings.

Stefanie Feldman, from the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, emphasized the importance of safe storage, highlighting the prevalence of guns in school shootings and the impact on parents’ concerns.

“We know safe storage of firearms can save lives, especially by reducing suicide by firearms and school shootings,” Feldman said.

“I know that there are some parents who wake up every day, drop their kids off for school and while they’re watching their kids walk through that door, there’s just a little part of them that worries about gun violence during the school day,” Feldman said.

The Justice Department will release a guide on safe firearm storage, and the Education Department will distribute materials to schools and families.

This initiative reflects the administration’s focus on voluntary measures and limited executive action in the absence of congressional support for stricter gun control proposals.
