NATO signed a $1.2 billion contract to produce 220,000 rounds of 155-millimeter artillery ammunition to replenish member countries’ stocks and support Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said, “This is important to defend our own territory, to build up our own stocks, but also to continue to support Ukraine.”
“We cannot allow President (Vladimir) Putin to win in Ukraine,” he continued.
“That would be a tragedy for the Ukrainians and dangerous for all of us,” he added.
The ammunition will help allies defend their territories and bolster Ukraine’s ability to resist Russian aggression.
However, delivery of the ordered shells will take 24 to 36 months. The European Union’s plan to produce 1 million artillery rounds for Ukraine has faced challenges, with only about a third of the target met so far.
