The British government has hired private boats to assist the Border Force in bringing illegal Channel migrants ashore at a cost of at least £36 million. This move comes as a result of delays in replacing the old Border Force fleet.
The government has also allocated £9 million to refurbish outdated vessels.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak seeks to implement a plan to send illegal boat migrants to Rwanda, aiming to save money and deter further crossings.
Some critics argue for a send-back-the-boats approach similar to Australia’s Operation Sovereign Borders.
The UK Border Force has been accused of operating a “taxi service” for illegal migrants, with over 600 migrants brought ashore this year following 30,000 successful crossings last year.
