The GOP’s majority in the House of Representatives has become even slimmer with the departure of Rep. Bill Johnson, resulting in 219 Republicans and 213 Democrats.
There are currently three vacancies, with special elections scheduled to fill them.
Additionally, some members are temporarily absent due to medical reasons.
Amidst these challenges, House Republicans are navigating negotiations on spending and border security with a Democratic-controlled Senate and White House, while also facing internal pushback from conservative members.
Speaker Mike Johnson emphasized the need to adhere to core conservative principles despite the limited majority.
“Everyone understands the reality of where we are,” Johnson said.
“The House Republicans have the second-smallest majority in history. We’re not going to get everything that we want. But we’re going to stick to our core conservative principles.”
