Left-wing activists in Colorado are aiming to establish the “right” to abortion through a ballot measure, which seeks to enshrine this right in the state constitution and overturn a 1984 amendment that restricts taxpayer funding for abortions.

The coalition, Coloradans for Protecting Reproductive Freedom, has begun signature-collection efforts and needs over 124,000 valid signatures to make it on the November ballot.

The measure would require 55 percent of voter support to pass.

“We’ve always been a national leader on this issue. We’ve always been a place where people who needed abortion care were able to come,” coalition spokesperson Laura Chapin stated.

This initiative is part of a broader trend, with activists in multiple states working to put abortion-related amendments on the ballot in 2024, following state-level pro-abortion victories after the fall of Roe v. Wade in 2022.
