An aide to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin requested that an ambulance arriving at Austin’s home be “subtle,” as revealed in an audio recording of the 911 call obtained by the Daily Beast.

The call suggests an effort to keep Austin’s ailment secret among his close aides.

Austin did not inform President Joe Biden and others of his hospitalization until days after the incident.

“Can I ask — can the ambulance not show up with lights and sirens? Uhm, we’re trying to remain a little subtle,” the aide said.

This led to calls for his resignation from both Republicans and Democrats, with inquiries launched into the handling of the situation.

The White House and the Department of Defense inspector general have initiated reviews, acknowledging that the situation was not ideal.

“That should not happen again — that if a Cabinet official becomes hospitalized or has to be seen for medical, certainly to the degree where the authority has to be delegated, that the White House needs to know,” White House spokesman John Kirby said.

Despite the controversy, President Biden has expressed full confidence in Austin, and the Pentagon has indicated that Austin has no plans to resign.
