The U.S. Transportation Department is awarding $148.8 million for projects in 20 states to repair or replace nearly 4,500 electric vehicle charging ports.

This initiative is part of the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program, funded by a $1 trillion 2021 infrastructure law, aiming to expand the nationwide network of chargers to 500,000 by 2030.

The goal is to address rising EV sales and enhance charging reliability.

Federal Highway Administrator Shailen Bhatt, said, “We know there’s going to be more demand for the technology.”

“We anticipate reliability being less of an issue going forward,” she continued.

The Biden administration is pushing for stringent tailpipe regulations, seeking to have 67% of new vehicles be electric by 2032, while facing opposition from automakers and Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives.
