The World Health Organization reported nearly 10,000 coronavirus deaths in December, with a significant surge in hospital and ICU admissions due to increased transmission from holiday gatherings.

The JN.1 variant is now the most commonly reported globally and is more adept at infecting vaccinated or previously infected individuals.

The WHO is urging governments to maintain surveillance, provide vaccines and treatments, and take precautions such as testing, vaccinating, wearing masks, and ensuring well-ventilated indoor areas. (Trending: Trump Defies Court And Delivers Closing Argument At Civil Fraud Trial)

Hospitalizations and coronavirus wastewater levels are rising in the United States, prompting the CDC to recommend updated vaccines for increased protection against JN.1.

“Although covid-19 is no longer a global health emergency, the virus is still circulating, changing and killing,” World Health Organization Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said.

“It is certain that there are also increases in other countries that are not being reported,” he said.

“Many countries have reduced or stopped reporting, which is part of the problem,” a WHO email read.

“Although 10,000 deaths a month is far less than the peak of the pandemic, this level of preventable death is not acceptable,” Tedros said.

“This year, particularly in the Northern Hemisphere, we are seeing close circulation of many different types of pathogens,” she added.

“These viruses, these bacteria, which pass effectively between people through the air, take advantage.”

Spain has made masks mandatory in hospitals and health facilities due to a surge in flu, coronavirus, and other respiratory illnesses.
