Pepperdine University President Jim Gash emphasized the need for universities to prioritize character formation and foundational American values in the face of recent scandals and declining public confidence.

He highlighted the impact of universities’ shift away from these values on society’s well-being and calls for a renewed focus on viewpoint diversity, moral character, and academic excellence.

Gash underscored the crucial role of higher education in developing productive citizens and fostering critical thinking and constructive dialogue. (Trending: Two Names Emerge As Trump’s Possible 2024 Running Mate)

“So if one goes into the workforce, having only encountered one worldview or ideological approach to particular issues then one is not well suited to engage in conversations” or “let alone [be] an informed voter,” Gash said.

“If all you’ve been exposed to in your education, whether it’s K-12 or higher education, is a particular viewpoint, whatever that may be, then you’re ill-suited to reach your potential in contributing to society,” he added.

“Having a curriculum that exposes students to a wide variety of topics and viewpoints,” allows students to learn “how to think” rather than “what to think,” Gash said.

Schools should “demand uncompromising academic excellence, in which integrity is a foundational component,” he said. “They can play a critical role in imparting humility by exposing students to the world through international programs that broaden their perspectives and encourage humble appreciation for other cultures.”

“Likewise, students learn selflessness through the experience of serving others, and colleges can play a formative role in developing this lifelong leadership trait by helping them identify and meet the needs of others.”

“We will fade as a society if we lose the ability to do critical thinking and constructive dialogue in a civil manner, like we’ve been able to do prior to recent times,” Gash said.
