As Iowans prepared for the Republican presidential caucus, LGBTQ+ residents expressed concerns about the candidates’ homophobic and transphobic views, particularly their opposition to gender-affirming healthcare and trans women’s participation in sports.
The candidates, including front-runner Donald Trump, have called for a national ban on gender-affirming care for young people.
Their anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric has not gained support from the LGBTQ+ community in Iowa, as they remain firm in their decision not to support these candidates.

“I fought for their rights and now they want to take away mine,” veteran transgender Eligh Cade stated.
“They know they won’t get our vote,” drag show director Isaac Lovan said.
In contrast, past Democratic candidates have actively courted the LGBTQ+ vote in Iowa, engaging with the community through various events and appearances.
