A Republican member of the Maryland State Board of Elections, Carlos Ayala, resigned after being arrested by the FBI for participating in the U.S. Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021.

He was appointed by Gov. Wes Moore, a Democrat, and confirmed by the state Senate.

Ayala was allegedly identified among the rioters and seen on video footage participating in the breach. (Trending: Clintons Scramble To Delete Embarrassing Photo, But Were Too Slow)

“The board is committed to maintaining the security and integrity of our elections in Maryland in a non-partisan manner,” state elections board chair Michael Summers said.

“The State Board will remain steadfast in our mission to oversee our elections process and serve as a trusted source of information for all Marylanders during the presidential election year.”

“When democracy is under threat, we can’t make any assumptions,” Senate President Bill Ferguson said.

“Nothing is predetermined.”

Over 1,200 people have been charged with Capitol riot-related federal crimes, with approximately 900 pleading guilty or being convicted.
