The Chinese state-run Global Times expressed concern over the expected surge of democratic elections worldwide in 2024, warning that the rise of far-right politics could disrupt globalism.
The publication highlighted potential challenges, including the risk of spillovers from regional wars, great power confrontations, protectionism concerns, and the rise of populist and right-wing politicians due to upcoming elections.

The Global Times reported, “Chinese experts said that in 2024 challenges and crises will remain, including the risk of spillovers from current regional wars, great power confrontations, protectionism concerns.”
The outlet blamed “the rise of populist and right-wing politicians, and the great uncertainty to policies that will come from the different results of upcoming elections.”
Professor Li Haidong, said, “The rise of far-right politics is likely to lead to a further tightening of trade, foreign investment and immigration policies, and a further damage to globalization.”
“Economic protectionism is likely to intensify in 2024,” added the expert.
Additionally, there have been specific political developments in various countries, such as the election of right-wing populist leaders in Italy and Argentina, and their rejection of ties with China.
