Israel’s Supreme Court has struck down a key component of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s judicial overhaul, which could reignite tensions in the country.
The decision overturned a law that prevents judges from striking down government decisions they deem “unreasonable.”
This was part of a planned overhaul to curb the power of judges and strengthen democracy, but critics see it as a power grab by Netanyahu.
In an 8-to-7 decision, Israel’s Supreme Court this week struck down the Netanyahu government’s effort to curtail the high court's powers. The court also ruled that it has the right to strike down “Basic Laws,” similar to Constitutional amendments, passed by the government. 1/2 pic.twitter.com/nQqGFrdzS0

The court’s decision could affect national unity and the military’s readiness.
Netanyahu’s allies have grievances against the court, and the U.S. had previously urged him to seek broad consensus for the plans.
