Texas authorities have detained thousands of immigrants using a “arrest and jail” operation to discourage illegal immigration along the state’s southern border.
Around 10,000 immigrants have been jailed for misdemeanor trespassing under state laws, with plans to expand law enforcement operations through new legislation.
Governor Greg Abbott signed laws allowing the arrest of illegal immigrants on trespassing charges and faced threats of a lawsuit from the Biden administration. (Trending: Supreme Court Shocks Jack Smith In Case Against Trump)
“Because SB 4 is unconstitutional and will disrupt the federal government’s operations, we request that Texas forbear in its enforcement,” Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Brian Boynton wrote to Abbott.
The impact of these efforts on the immigration crisis remains unclear, as record numbers of law enforcement encounters with immigrants were reported.
“By strategically holding the release of these numbers until the Friday before Christmas, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas is unabashedly showing the full measure of his duplicity,” GOP Rep. Mark Green said.
“These numbers are so bad, he wants as few Americans to see them as possible.”
Additionally, a new migrant surge is building at the border, with a caravan of approximately 8,000 people heading towards the U.S. border.
