The Wisconsin state Supreme Court election in April resulted in a left-leaning majority that is considered highly consequential.
This may have a potential impact on gerrymandering and state policymaking.
The court has ruled the current GOP-drawn legislative maps unconstitutional, highlighting the issue of disproportionate power allocation favoring Republicans.
This decision presents an opportunity to address the imbalance and could lead to significant changes in Wisconsin’s political landscape, potentially restoring a fairer democratic process.
The Wisconsin Supreme Court wrote, “At least 50 of 99 assembly districts and at least 20 of 33 senate districts violate this mandate, rendering them unconstitutional.”
MSNBC’s Clarissa-Jan Lim reported, “The court will allow the state legislature and Gov. Tony Evers, a Democrat, to take a first stab at approving new maps. But if they cannot agree — as was the case in 2020, which led to the present-day maps — the court will take over drawing new maps.”
