The University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents unanimously fired UW-La Crosse Chancellor Joe Gow after discovering videos of him and his wife on porn websites.
The couple, using pseudonyms, also published books about their experiences in the adult film industry.
Despite claiming his actions fall under free speech, the board stated his conduct caused reputational harm. (Trending: Trump Releases Must-See TV Ad Ahead of 2024)
“There’s nothing said about the University of Wisconsin; there’s nothing said about the chancellor (on the videos),” Dr. Gow said.
“So someone else would have to make those associations. And then someone would have to say those are problematic.”
No university funds were used for the content. The board’s decision contrasts earlier praise for Gow’s leadership.
“In recent days, we learned of specific conduct by Dr. Gow that has subjected the university to significant reputational harm,” UW System President Jay Rothman said.
“His actions were abhorrent.”
“We are alarmed, and disgusted, by his actions, which were wholly and undeniably inconsistent with his role as chancellor,” UW Board of Regents President Karen Walsh said.
Additionally, the couple’s involvement in the adult industry was not a first-time controversy for Gow.
