Former Sen. Claire McCaskill believes the legal decision to bar Donald Trump from Colorado ballots is sound due to his involvement in the Jan. 6, 2021 insurrection.
However, she also thinks it may help Trump politically. Trump plans to appeal the decision to the U.S. Supreme Court.
McCaskill, speaking as both a lawyer and a politician, sees a strong legal case against Trump but believes the decision could benefit him politically. (Trending: Assault Weapons Ban Set To Take Effect, Here’s What To Know)
She expressed a desire for the Supreme Court to put Trump back on the ballot, only to be defeated.
“As a lawyer, I get this, and I think there is a real strong case for the Supreme Court to agree with Colorado,” McCaskill said.
“As somebody who is a politician,” she said, “I think it’s a real bad decision, because I think it really helps Donald Trump. And I don’t like anything that helps Donald Trump.”
“In a perfect world, if I could write the script, the Supreme Court would put him back on the ballot and then he would be defeated soundly.”
Trump has a history of leveraging legal challenges for political gain and has used the Colorado ruling to fundraise.
