Former President Donald Trump was recorded pressuring two Wayne County, Michigan, election canvassers to not certify the 2020 presidential election results.
The Detroit News reported that Trump and Ronna McDaniel, the Republican National Committee chair, spoke with the Republican canvassers, Monica Palmer and William Hartmann, on November 17, 2020.
Trump expressed concern that the canvassers would look bad if they signed the certification after initially refusing to do so. (Trending: Assault Weapons Ban Set To Take Effect, Here’s What To Know)
According to the Detroit News, Trump said, “We’ve got to fight for our country.”
“We can’t let these people take our country away from us,” the outlet reported Trump continued.
“His concern was about my safety, and that was really touching,” said Palmer in an earlier interview.
Adding, “It was not pressure. It was genuine concern for my safety.”
McDaniel reportedly offered legal assistance if they refused to certify Biden’s win in the county.
The canvassers later tried to rescind their support for certification, alleging pressure, but were unsuccessful.
Trump is currently facing felony charges related to his actions after the 2020 election loss, including charges in Georgia and federal charges related to the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.
