A federal judge presiding over a challenge to Florida’s transgender health care ban for minors and restrictions for adults has expressed skepticism about Governor Ron DeSantis’ motivation for the law.
The judge noted that DeSantis had spread false information about doctors mutilating children’s genitals, despite no documented cases.

Judge Robert Hinkle said to Mohammad Jazil, a lawyer for the state, “The law was sold as defending children from mutilation when it is actually about preventing trans children from getting health care.”
“When I’m analyzing the governor’s motivation, what should I make of these statements?” asked Hinkle.
“This seems to be more than just hyperbole,” he continued.
“It’s about treating a medical condition; it’s not about targeting transgender individuals,” said Jazil.
The judge has temporarily blocked enforcement of the law as it pertains to minors and is set to rule on whether the state deliberately targeted transgender people through the new law.
The lawsuit also challenges restrictions placed on adult trans care.
