A bill in Tennessee aims to restrict public and charter schools from displaying flags other than the U.S. and Tennessee state flags, targeting symbols like LGBTQ pride flags.

The sponsor, Rep. Gino Bulso, cited concerns about political statements in classrooms.

The proposed legislation follows debates in the Williamson County School Board and could impact flags like Black Lives Matter. (Trending: Assault Weapons Ban Set To Take Effect, Here’s What To Know)

This aligns with a national trend to remove the pride flag from public spaces, prompting the Gilbert Baker Foundation to launch a “Save the Rainbow” campaign.

Similarly, a Florida GOP bill seeks to prohibit flags representing political viewpoints.

“A school should be a place where a child goes to learn, not a place where a child goes to be indoctrinated,” state Rep. Gino Bulso, R-Brentwood pressed, stating that the bill prevents “authority figures from injecting into the classroom these political statements.”

“Obviously, there’s a balance there,” Bulso said. “But the purpose of the school is to educate the child.”

“It’s not a place for people to go and make statements that are protected by the First Amendment.”

The National Education Association supports the display of pride flags as representations of diversity, equity, and inclusion, rather than political declarations.

“I personally think that the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is a fraud, and what we’re seeing now on our campuses across the country is proof of that,” Rep. Burgess Owens said.
