Hollywood is facing a tumultuous period with leadership vacuums, industry-wide challenges, and internal divisions.

Key figures like Bob Iger and Ted Sarandos are accused of struggling to provide cohesive leadership, while Disney’s recent performance and Marvel’s setbacks are causing concern.

The industry is also dealing with the aftermath of strikes and internal discord, particularly related to responses to global events. (Trending: Prominent LGBTQ Activist Arrested Over Disturbing Charges)

“There’s a huge leadership vacuum, and that’s not about to change,” explained Michael Nathanson.

“Bob Iger is not really that guy anymore.,” said Nathanson.

“If he hadn’t left [in 2020] and returned, he would be that guy,” he explained.

Adding, “And Ted Sarandos is still not trusted enough by people for him to have that leadership role. I think people are like, ‘What’s his motive? Are we really going to turn this over to Netflix?’”

Iger said, “There wasn’t as much supervision on the [summer 2021] set, so to speak, where we have executives really looking over what’s being done day after day after day.”

“We need Marvel movies to work,” demanded an executive that asked to remain anonymous. “They drive people to theaters who then see other movies. When you have a movie like ‘The Marvels,’ it’s bad for all of us.”

Wall Street analyst Eric Wold of B. Rile said, “The theaters had for the most part survived [COVID], but the strikes put a big wrinkle in the recovery process.”

“Box office was recovering. You had clear evidence that consumers want to see films in theaters. Now, we’ve got a lot of uncertainty around production schedules and just what 2024 is going to look like. So we have another roadblock in the recovery of the industrt,” continued the analyst.

“I’m bracing for when studios make a film and bypass the guilds using AI, which I think is going to happen,” he said.

“Guild agreements are there regarding the treatment, conditions and payment for employees. Well, if you don’t use employees and you just bypass them completely, guilds can’t do anything about it.”

Additionally, there are fears about the impact of AI on labor relationships in the future.
