Charles Donohoe, a former leader of the Proud Boys, has been sentenced to over three years in prison for his involvement in the January 6 Capitol attack.
He pleaded guilty to conspiring with other Proud Boys to obstruct Congress’ certification of President Biden’s electoral victory.
“I knew what I was doing was illegal from the very moment those barricades got knocked down,” he said. (Trending: Judge Announces Historic Ruling In Jeffrey Epstein Case)
Despite facing a recommended prison term of 35 to 43 months, he received a sentence of three years and four months.
Donohoe, who apologized for his actions, could be eligible for release in a month or two due to time served.
“Donohoe and his co-conspirators organized and led a small army as they launched an attack on the heart of our democracy. They took these actions because they did not like the outcome of the election,” prosecutors wrote.
His cooperation with federal authorities was noted, and the judge expressed hope that he would put his crimes behind him.
“It took Charlie time to understand the nature of his wrong,” defense attorney Ira Knight said.
The case of another Proud Boys member charged with storming the Capitol was also mentioned.
