Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park recently welcomed the birth of Corra, the first “second generation” African elephant calf in seven years.

Corra’s mother, Nadirah, was also born at the park, making her arrival particularly special.

The calf will be introduced to her family members and will be cared for by a dedicated team. (Trending: Judge Announces Historic Ruling In Jeffrey Epstein Case)

Nadirah’s “sister Luna was there to guide her and comfort her throughout the process,” said Scott Terrell, DVM, DACVP, director of Animal & Science Operations.

“The calf will soon get to meet her grandma, Donna, and her other aunt, Stella, too,” said Terrell.

“These family bonds will only grow stronger as the calf gets older,” he said.

“It takes a team of dedicated cast members to care for a pregnant elephant and eventually, her newborn calf,” he added.

The mother will “undergo continued post-natal exams and spend several days bonding before they are ready to join the rest of the herd,” said Terrell.

The gestation period for African elephants is 22 months, and the calf will be closely monitored in her early days.

The African elephant population is at risk due to poaching and habitat destruction, with only about 415,000 remaining in the wild.
