Former President Donald Trump’s legal team is challenging a gag order imposed by a judge, preventing him from criticizing court officials and engaging in speech that could be seen as witness tampering.
They have requested a full federal appeals court review and the lifting of the gag order.
The case revolves around charges related to the January 6th, 2021 events, with Trump accusing the prosecutor of political motives. (Trending: FBI Bribery Probe Caught Joe Biden’s Brother On Tape)
The lawyers argue that the gag order violates Trump’s First Amendment rights and question its impact on political speech.
“This petition presents a question of exceptional importance,” wrote Trump’s attorneys in a filing.
“Whether a district court may gag the core political speech of the leading candidate for president of the United States — disregarding the First Amendment rights of over 100 million American voters — based on speculation about undefined possible future harms,” they continued.
Additionally, Trump has the option to petition the U.S. Supreme Court.
The case’s timeline is being prolonged by the president’s legal team, aiming to delay the trial potentially beyond the 2024 elections.
