Democratic congressmember Dean Phillips has endorsed “Medicare for All,” aligning himself with progressive politics.
This move marks a shift for Phillips, who has typically been associated with the centrist wing of the Democratic Party.
He emphasized that his decision is not purely for campaign reasons, despite his long-shot primary challenge against President Joe Biden. (Trending: FBI Bribery Probe Caught Joe Biden’s Brother On Tape)
Phillips’ evolution towards this endorsement stems from personal experiences, including his daughter’s illness and his observations of health care disparities.
While he still has reservations about certain aspects of the bill, he sees it as a step towards achieving better health care outcomes.
Phillips plans to co-sign the “Medicare for All” bill, emphasizing a combination of progressive and conservative principles to achieve centrist progress.
“I started to recognize this massive disconnect between the behemoths in the health insurance business and then the people that I represented, who were telling me the most horrifying stories about having their coverage denied or having to take on medical debt or going bankrupt,” Phillips said.
“I have a progressive heart, a pragmatic head, and want to work with people on both sides of the aisle to achieve better outcomes for the country that both improve care and lower costs,” he said.
“Those are the best combinations of progressive and conservative principles I could possibly imagine, and that makes this proposition remarkably centrist.”
Phillips stated that he has “some differences of opinion on some of the transitional plans and some of the parameters” of the “Medicare for All” bill.
