The White House is hosting nearly 100 lawmakers to discuss strategies for reducing gun violence in their states.
The newly established gun violence prevention office, overseen by Vice President Kamala Harris, aims to provide guidelines and resources for states to take action in areas such as responsible gun ownership, support for survivors, and creating state-run offices.
The meeting follows recent shootings, including one at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. (Trending: Joe Biden Impeachment Formalized As Republicans Unite)
Stefanie Feldman, director of the Office of Gun Violence Prevention said, “We’ve been meeting with the state legislators ever since the start of our office, and one thing we hear all the time is they want to do more to reduce gun violence.”
Adding, “The question is, what should they do and how?”
The Biden administration is treating gun violence as a significant issue, likening the response to natural disasters and providing model legislation for safe storage and reporting of lost firearms.
The effort also aims to address domestic violence, community violence, and suicides, in addition to mass shootings.
According to a database maintained by The Associated Press and USA Today in partnership with Northeastern University, there have been 42 mass killings in the United States this year, leaving at least 217 people dead. This data does not include the shooters that died in the incidents.
