Former President Donald Trump’s legal team had a meeting with special counsel Jack Smith, where they discussed potential charges against Trump.
Despite the attorneys’ arguments that charging Trump would be a mistake, Smith did not indicate any forthcoming indictment.
However, shortly after the meeting, Trump was indicted on new charges related to classified documents and challenging the 2020 election results. (Trending: Photos Released Of Cocaine Found In White House)
ABC’s Jonathan Karl makes accusations about a meeting between prosecutor Jack Smith and Trump’s defense team.
“After some short pleasantries, Smith invited the Trump lawyers to sit at the conference table and offered them some water to drink,” claims Karl.
Politico was given excerpts of the forthcoming book and reported on Karl’s description of the presentation given by John Lauro meant to persuade Smith not to pursue charges against the former president.
“Lauro’s presentation featured a now-familiar case — that Trump genuinely believed he won the [2020 election] and was exercising his First Amendment right to challenge it and raise questions; that Trump was following the advice of his lawyers; and that he had already faced impeachment and an extensive congressional investigation over the matter,” reported Politico.
Adding, “Indicting him would just inflame a divided country further, Lauro said, according to Karl’s account.”
Karl reportedly wrote that Smith did not interrupt or comment on the hour-long presentation, but thanked Trump’s attorneys for their time.
The book claims that Smith and federal prosecutors appeared to be paying attention to the attorneys’ presentation.
These indictments were unexpected, and they are separate from the ongoing trial in New York, which is a civil matter.
