The town of North Andover, Massachusetts, has approved a permit to fly the Palestinian flag on the town common until December 7.

The decision was made after a heated meeting, with local residents expressing both support and opposition.

The application for the flag was submitted just 6 hours prior to the town updating its flag policies. (Trending: Photos Released Of Cocaine Found In White House)

Some residents view the Palestinian flag as a symbol of hate, while others argued for equal rights to display flags.

“A lot of tension, a lot of opposition,” attendee Salma Boulal said.

“If Israel gets their flag to fly in the North Andover common then Palestinians deserve that same right.”

“It was pretty heated…there are those that look at the Palestinian flag as a symbol of hate,” Brian Buzby stated.

“The prior flag policy specifically allowed a Town resident to submit an application to fly a flag on the Town’s flagpole, resulting in that flagpole being considered a public forum,” Town Manager Melissa Rodrigues said.

“The content or the subject matter of a flag cannot be considered when reviewing an application presented under the old policy.”

The decision has reportedly sparked controversy and tension across the town.
