Newly elected House Speaker Mike Johnson faces a challenging budget battle as the current law is set to expire, leaving no funds for the government.
Johnson’s plan to avoid a government shutdown involves a novel “staggered” budget process, which has garnered mixed reactions.

Some members of Congress are openly against the strategy.
Sen. Shelley Moore (R-WV) said in response, “Having never heard of it before, I don’t think it’s a good idea.”
Sen. Collins (R-ME) expressed that she has “a lot of reservations” about the plan.
Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) outright said, “That’s the craziest, stupidest thing I’ve ever heard of.”
His caucus is divided, and with the 2024 election approaching, securing a budget win is crucial.
Johnson is also constrained by the “72-hour rule,” which gives politicians 72 hours to negotiate budgetary issues.
There is a group of Republicans that are willing to risk a government shutdown and Johnson has already witnessed what a small number of disgruntled members can unseat a Speaker of the House.
