Former President Donald Trump’s lawyers changed their stance on televising his upcoming trial, prompting a response from special counsel Jack Smith.
The trial has seen a back-and-forth on whether it should be broadcast.
The trial is scheduled for March 4, 2024, and involves four charges related to the 2020 election. President Trump’s team has requested the trial be televised for transparency.

Smith claimed that “the Government sought the defendant’s position on the applications, and his counsel requested that the Government represent to the court that he took no position.”
Adding, “The Government accurately reported that to the court.”
Later in the week, Smith claimed that he was “misled” and that Trump now wants the trial to be broadcast.
One of Trump’s attorney’s, Joh Lauro declared that they want to broadcast the trial “so that all Americans can see what’s happening in our criminal justice system.”
“The public has a right to a prompt and efficient resolution of this matter,” proclaimed Judge Chutkan while picking a date for the trial.
Smith’s office said, “Prohibiting cameras in the courtroom passes constitutional muster because the restriction on the manner of access is reasonable and promotes significant governmental interests.”
“Adding, “A content-neutral time, place, and manner restriction satisfies the First Amendment so long as it serves significant government interests, is narrowly tailored to those interests, and leaves open ample alternative channels for speech.”
President Trump’s attorneys claim that they are pursuing transparency.
“President Trump calls for sunlight,” said his attorneys.
“Every person in America, and beyond, should have the opportunity to study this case firsthand and watch as, if there is a trial, President Trump exonerates himself of these baseless and politically motivated charges,” they declared.
Judge Chutkan denied President Trump’s request to push the trial beyond the 2024 election.
President Trump has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
