There are many challenges and complexities surrounding gun control in the United States, but one thing is for certain. It would never succeed.
Due to the incredible abundance of firearms in the country, to the tune of an estimated 400,000,000, there is simply no way for government to effectively monitor or remove the extent of such an inventory from the existing market, whether legally or illegally obtained.
On top of the mass numbers of firearms in circulation, the deeply rooted culture of gun ownership in rural states and the difficulty in actually estimating the total number of firearms in the homes of Americans poses a massive obstacle to enforcing any kind of true control.
Buy-back programs such as that of Australia have been proven to fail in various ways, on top of the fact that the government “down under” was dealing with vastly lower numbers of firearms.
In the end, gun control simply is not a solution for the United States, but rather, many experts believe in simply placing firearms in the hands of the right people, in the right places.
