Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas responsible for a recent terror attack on Israel, was treated for brain cancer while serving a life sentence in an Israeli prison.
He was released in a prisoner exchange and returned to violence against Israelis.
Israeli officials pointed to Sinwar’s life-saving surgery as evidence that Palestinian prisoners are being well-treated.
“When they say they are not being treated well, I would ask you and others to give a phone call to one specific person, Yahya Sinwar, who is alive nowadays just because of life-saving surgery he was given,” said prison commissioner Orit Adato.
Sinwar has a long history of involvement in terrorism and has shown no change in his radical aims, despite receiving medical care from Israeli doctors.
Israeli defense minister Yoav Gallant vowed to kill Sinwar and eliminate Hamas from Gaza.
