Just Minutes After Jail Release, Man Killed Attempting to Carjack Family

Jarvis Houston, a Texan individual, was fatally shot in an attempted carjacking shortly after his release from Angelina County Jail.


The owner of the truck involved confessed to shooting Houston to prevent theft, with the incident involving the victim’s family inside.

Marco Leyva

Marco Leyva, aged 25, reported the events, stating he made a stop at his establishment in Lufkin around 9 p.m. on Wednesday.

Wife and baby

As per the police statement, during the pause of the vehicle, an unfamiliar man to Leyva allegedly “entered his running truck with his wife and baby daughter inside.”

Physical altercation

“Despite Leyva’s warnings and offers of an alternative vehicle, a physical altercation ensued, resulting in the suspect being shot,” the post said. Upon police arrival, Leyva was apprehended.

Succumbed to injuries

Houston was transported to a nearby hospital but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.

Surveillance footage

The social media post mentioned that Leyva’s version of events was supported by surveillance footage from his establishment.

Law enforcement

Law enforcement indicated that Leyva is not anticipated to face charges, as the incident is classified as an act of self-defense. However, the Angelina County District Attorney’s Office is examining the case.


There were no reported injuries to Leyva or his family members.

Jail release

“Despite initial difficulty in identifying the suspect, officers discovered a paper sack at the scene, suggesting a recent jail release. Subsequent contact with the jail confirmed the suspect’s identity as Jarvis Houston, 47, of Lufkin,” the post said.

Jail officials

“Jail officials informed officers that Houston had been released less than an hour prior,” as indicated in the post. Houston was incarcerated on allegations of assault involving family violence resulting in physical harm, along with a warrant for a misdemeanor.

Pending charges

Authorities stated that Houston had no pending charges upon his release from jail.


Law enforcement mentioned that the investigation into the matter is ongoing.
