Kamala Harris

Vice President Kamala Harris, the previous San Francisco district attorney, returned to her former area to gather funds for the Biden-Harris reelection campaign. Upon arrival, she was met by a large group of over a hundred pro-Palestinian demonstrators.

Bay Area

Her visit to the Bay Area coincided with former President Trump’s upcoming attendance at a fundraising event in San Francisco, occurring precisely a week after his conviction on 34 felony charges related to falsifying records in a scandal involving hush money payments to a pornographic actor.

Fundraising

Before reaching San Francisco, Harris had participated in a fundraising event at a private residence in the Oakland Hills.

Supporting Palestine

While the attendees entered the venue, a group of demonstrators supporting Palestine congregated outside the location where Harris was scheduled to address the crowd and chanted, “Shame on you!” and “Cease fire!” as attendees walked inside.

Relocate

At the request of the police, the protesters were urged to relocate further down the street from the venue, with the threat of arrests looming.

Barriers

Barriers were promptly erected between the protesters and law enforcement. The activists’ voices became more pronounced as the vice president’s convoy drew near.

Bay Area politics

Meanwhile, within a cozy live music spot in San Francisco’s Mission district, Harris engaged with around 100 backers, acknowledging some familiar faces from her tenure in Bay Area politics.

Election

“We have all been involved in these four-year cycles many times together,” Harris said. “We have almost every time talked about ‘this is the one.’ Well, this year is the one. Everything is at stake in this election.”

Democratic contributors

The event was organized by Democratic contributors Shannon Hunt-Scott, Stacy Mason, and Sheila Thompson, along with small-business proprietor Manny Yekutiel, who manages a community venue hosting civic functions.

Legal troubles

In the segment of the gathering open to reporters, Harris did not touch upon Trump’s legal troubles or President Biden’s recent order limiting asylum seekers at the southern border.

Abortion rights

Throughout her 13-minute speech, Harris focused on the diminishing abortion rights in various states and reiterated her plea for a truce in the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

Innocent civilians

“What we’ve seen in Gaza is far too many innocent civilians being killed,” she said. “Humanitarian aid being denied in many cases. The president and I have been very clear. This war must end, we need a cease-fire, we need the hostages out, we need aid going in, and we need to be committed to a two-state solution.”
